I've been running a lot of computer simulations lately.
These start in random initial conditions and (eventually) learn image features. When the simulation has figured it all out, its dictionary of features stops changing: we say that the simulation has "converged", or "settled".
This can, and often is, a long process (several days, up to a few weeks), which is frustrating if you just want to know the answer!
So, what is the sound of a simulation as it settles? Well, it sounds like hope and despair, all set to the gentle hum of the computer's cooling fan. Ben Gibbard would be proud.
